28th January 1953: Derek Bentley hanged for murder
Teenager Derek Bentley was executed at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London for his part in the murder of a policeman.
Bentley had been sentenced to hang at the Old Bailey in December for the death of Pc Sidney Miles during a break-in at a warehouse in Croydon, south London.
At the end of the trial his accomplice, Christopher Craig, at 16 was too young to be executed so was sent to prison.
19-year-old Bentley, who had the mental age of an 11-year-old, had allegedly urged Craig to shoot Pc Miles.
As was the practice after his execution Bentley’s body was quietly buried within the prison grounds.
However, in the 1990s his family were allowed to move his remains to Croydon cemetery before he was finally pardoned in 1998. Craig was released in 1963 after 10 years in jail.
