2nd February 1901: Capital says farewell to Queen Victoria
Thousands of people lined the streets of central London on a bitterly cold winter’s day to say farewell to Queen Victoria.
The Queen had passed away at the age of 81 at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight on the 22nd of January. She had reigned for nearly 64 years - longer than any other British sovereign.
Brought via the Royal yacht to Portsmouth and then via special train to Victoria Station, the coffin was placed onto a gun carriage for the procession through the city streets.
By Victoria's own instruction the colour black was banned from her funeral, and the streets of the capital were decorated in purple and white.
Taken via the Royal train from Paddington station she was buried, beside her husband Prince Albert, in the Frogmore Royal Mausoleum at Windsor 2 days later.
